Four of Nareth's peoples are the peoples of the starting heroes: in the character creator, race and class form a fixed pair (see below). Your race gives your character their body and appearance, your class their way of fighting. Every race can appear as male or female.
The starting heroes and their peoples
| Starting hero | Race | Class | In short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ironvowed | Human | Ironvowed | The youngest and most numerous people of Nareth. |
| Moonshade | Shadowblooded | Moonshade | Descendants of the orphans of the Silent Hand and the Moonarrow. |
| Ashcaller | Demonblooded | Ashcaller | Descendants of the survivors of the ancient Breaking. |
| Runecaller | Half-elf | Runecaller | Children of the forbidden union of elves and humans. |
The fifth: Dark Elf
A warrior of the Shadowspear order. Not a starting people: it unlocks after level 300, and the new hero starts at level 1 (Classes).
Human
The youngest and most numerous people of Nareth, at home in the lands of all three factions. They light lanterns for their dead, of whom they have not dreamed in a thousand years.
Shadowblooded
The Shadowblooded are descendants of the orphans of the Silent Hand and the Moonarrow: a slender, dark-skinned people raised by moonlight. They creep by night, see in shadow, and can die so quietly that the ash hardly notices. Other peoples shun them, for their name recalls an old forgotten war, yet it was they who kept the old Shadowpaths alive. Weapons: dagger, bow, sword. Class: Moonshade.
Demonblooded
Descendants of the survivors of the ancient Breaking, with horns and ash-grey skin. They are feared and shunned, yet they are the first to hear what the darkness whispers, and the ones who resist it best. Class: Ashcaller.
Half-elf
Half-elves are the children of the forbidden union of elves and humans a thousand years ago: neither the Bloodpine Woods nor the cities call them their own. In return they hear both peoples: the whisper of the elven forest and the lantern light of the human dead. The Runevoice Circle gladly takes them in, for they do not have to learn how to listen. Weapons: rune bell, rune staff, rune fan. Class: Runecaller.
